More About Meningitis

This illness is uncommon but can be fatal. The CDC recommends a meningococcal vaccine for:

  •  All children ages 11-18 or certain younger high-risk children
  •  Anyone who has been exposed to meningitis during an outbreak
  • Anyone traveling to or living where meningitis is common, such as in sub-Saharan Africa
  • Military recruits
  • People with certain immune disorders or a damaged or missing spleen.

This illness is a leading cause of bacterial meningitis in teens. There are two different types of vaccines needed to help protect against the five vaccine-preventable serogroups of meningitis. Even if your teen or young adult has had a vaccine for serogroups A, C, Wand Y, a different vaccine is needed to help protect against serogroup B.
