Feeling drowsy and sluggish once in a while isn’t unusual, but if these symptoms occur frequently (for example, over a period of several months or more than 2 days per week) and interfere with your work, school, activities, or relationships, you may be dealing with excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS).

More About Excessive Daytime Sleepiness

There are many possible causes of excessive daytime sleepiness. The most common causes of excessive daytime sleepiness are sleep deprivation, obstructive sleep apnea, and sedating medications. Other potential causes of excessive daytime sleepiness include certain medical and psychiatric conditions and sleep disorders, such as narcolepsy.

Sleep apnea is a condition in which your airway becomes obstructed, causing disruptions to breathe during sleep. (Apnea means the absence of breathing for at least 10 seconds.) People with this condition have less restful sleep because of the frequent occurrence of apneas or restricted airflow during sleep time, and wake up frequently during the night, leading to excessive daytime sleepiness. Obstructive sleep apnea has been linked with serious health problems, including increased risk for hypertension, atrial fibrillation, heart attack, and stroke. It tends to strike older adults and is more common in men than women.

Excessive sleepiness can also be caused by getting fragmented or otherwise poor-quality sleep. Getting up multiple times a night to use the washroom, for example, disrupts the natural progression of the sleep stages and may reduce the proportion of restorative slow-wave sleep. Smoking, not exercising enough, and other lifestyle habits may also interfere with sleep quality and cause daytime sleepiness.

Signs & Symptoms

Sleep plays an important role in consolidating memory, restoring the immune system, and other vital processes. As a result, a lack of quality sleep may result in a host of symptoms that you may not immediately connect to sleep. Even if you don’t consciously feel sleepy, you may be suffering from excessive sleepiness if you’re experiencing any of the following:

  • Trouble staying alert
  • Feelings of irritation
  • Memory problems
  • Trouble focusing
  • Difficulty retaining new concepts
  • Difficulty making decisions
  • Slower reaction times
  • Risk-taking behaviors
